What benefits to expect when you stay at Grand Hyatt Berlin as a World of Hyatt Globalist member?
Grand Hyatt Berlin opened in 1998 and was last renovated in 2013. It has a total of 342 rooms and requires 12,000 to 18,000 points per night for award stays.
Location
The hotel is located in central Berlin, close to tourist attractions and a train/metro station.
- 5 mins walk to Berlin Potsdamer Platz Bahnhof (train/metro station)
- 10 mins walk to Mall of Berlin
- 40 mins train to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)
Arrival
Upon arrival, we were assisted with our luggages before being directed to the reception.
Although some suites were available that day, I wasn’t given a room upgrade as a Globalist member but was offered a complimentary minibar for the duration of my stay.
King Room
Room 732 is 38sqm / 409sqft in size.
For a base room, it was large but the layout and design felt dated.
Service lapse and recovery
On two occasions, a staff member opened the door to my room before walking away when realising that the double-lock mechanism stopped the door from opening.
I called in to ask why it happened and the front office manager quickly apologised for it.
Shortly after returning from my afternoon tea at the Grand Club Lounge, I received a call in the room and was informed that the hotel would like to upgrade me to the Grand Suite View room to make up for what happened earlier. I thought it was really nice of them!
Grand Suite View
Room 242 is 69sqm / 743sqft in size.
This suite is large but like the base room, look and felt old with various “dim spots” with insufficient lighting.
Check out the video tour of this room on our Instagram page.
Internet speed
WiFi speed was stable and fast throughout my stay.
Grand Club Lounge
Globalist members and guests staying in rooms with club benefits have access to Grand Club Lounge.
Afternoon tea is served from 4 to 5pm and evening cocktail from 6 to 8pm.
I found the food quality and presentation to be very good for a European hotel.
Breakfast
Breakfast is complimentary for Globalist members and was held as a buffet at VOX restaurant.
Although variety was good, I found the food quality rather average for a hotel with room rates upwards of EUR 300 per night.
Other facilities
Guests have access to the 800sqm-large Club Olympus Spa & Fitness during their stay. We enjoyed the indoor pool and sauna areas during the stay, although, I found it strange that the indoor shower area is shared between male and female guests.
My ratings
This is how I am rating my stay, after considering the hotel’s usual nightly rate (in points):
Breakfast | 8/10 |
Service | 9/10 |
Location | 8/10 |
Room furnishing | 7/10 |
Club lounge | 9/10 |
View (from the room) | 8/10 |
Peace & quiet | 8/10 |
Facilities | 10/10 |
Elite member recognition | 8/10 |
Value | 8/10 |
Bottom line
With the cash rate going for more than EUR 300 per night, one can argue that 12,000 Hyatt points is a steal. Personally, for what the hotel offered, I found it to be overpriced in cash and correctly categorised as a Hyatt Category 4 hotel.
In other words, it is fair value on points, poor value with cash.
