What benefits to expect when you stay at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Autograph Collection as a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium or Platinum Elite member?
The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur was built in 1932 and served as a luxury hotel for colonial elites. During World War II, it was used as a transit camp. After being closed in 1983, it was restored and reopened in 2012 with a total of 300 rooms.
As of the time of writing, members will typically need 15,000 to 20,000 points per night for award stays.
Location
The hotel is located in central Kuala Lumpur but there are not many shops in the immediate vicinity of the property.
- 5 mins drive, 15 mins walk to KL Sentral train station and NU Sentral mall
- 15 mins drive to Petronas Twin Towers
- 1 hr drive to Kuala Lumpur International Airport
Arrival
Upon arrival, we were assisted with our luggages before being directed to the reception for check-in.
As a Titanium member, I was upgraded to the Junior Suite! Platinum members and above get to choose a welcome gift (shown below) and I picked 1,000 bonus points.
Junior Suite
Room 516 is 56sqm (603sqft) in size.
As expected from an old building, the suite is oddly shaped with some dark spots in the dining and work areas. Like other rooms in this hotel, the suite comes with colonial furnishing and was very well-maintained.
Club Lounge
Platinum members and above have access to the happy hour at The Writer’s Room from 5pm to 7pm daily.
The beautiful furnished The Writer’s Room has 2 sections with only about 5 tables. Only one other table was occupied during my visit.
Complimentary canapés and drinks offered during happy hour were of high quality. However, service was really slow and my orders took 20 to 30 minutes to arrive.
Internet speed
The WiFi speed was okay for general web-surfing.
Breakfast
Breakfast is complimentary for Platinum members and above. It was held as a buffet at Contango restaurant.
The buffet offers a fair variety of food. However, comparing to other hotels in Kuala Lumpur at a similar price point, the overall food quality was poor and not “5-star” standard.
Other facilities
My ratings
This is how I am rating my stay, after considering what I paid:
Breakfast | 5/10 |
Service | 7/10 |
Location | 8/10 |
Room furnishing | 9/10 |
View (from the room) | 8/10 |
Peace & quiet | 10/10 |
Club Lounge | 9/10 |
Facilities | 9/10 |
Elite member recognition | 9/10 |
Value | 7/10 |
Bottom line
The problem with “special” buildings like this is that a chunk of the accompanying room rate is for the “novelty” of staying here, not for the overall quality. The same goes for hotels in prestigious locations.
All things considered, it was an average but pleasant stay here and it’s great that the property proactively provide suite upgrades to Elite members upon availability.
