Best ways to redeem Avios

In my experience, Qatar Airways sets the standard when it comes to Business Class travel; offering great seats, airport lounges, food and overall Business Class experience.

Additional note: Qatar Airways does not pass on fuel surcharges for award bookings on its own flights, but the airline charges an additional booking fee per segment. The fee is US$35 per segment for Economy Class, and US$70 per segment on Business/First Class.

How to find Qatar Airways award space

The easiest and quickest way to search for oneworld award availability for free, is on American Airlines’ website, aa.com.

This is because, you will be able to set filters like “non-stop flights only”, “business class only” and no. of passengers, and have a lovely calendar view of the award availability.

As the segment between Singapore and Doha is usually the one with poorer award availability, and Qatar Airways is the only airline with non-stop flights, search for non-stop, Business/First awards between those two cities first.

Once you’ve found award space between Singapore and Doha, go ahead and search the other segment between Doha and Europe, Africa, North/South America.

Use aa.com only as a reference and ignore the miles indicated on the website. When you see availability on aa.com, replicate the search on qatarairways.com to confirm award availability and complete the booking.

Should you convert credit card miles/points to Avios?

The usual rule-of-thumb applies: Only convert your miles/points if you have plans to use them in the near future.

Citi miles/points are precious as they can be transferred to plenty of Frequent Flyer Programs. So, don’t feel like you’re missing out by not taking advantage of this deal as there are other great ways to use Citi miles/points.

If you already have plans to fly in the Qatar Airways Business Class in the coming months, this is a no-brainer. Be sure to check for award availability on qatarairways.com before committing.

Also, remember that Qatar Airways Avios can be transferred freely to British Airways Executive Club at a 1:1 ratio. Yes, including bonus Avios earned from this offer.

Bottom line

Qatar Airways is offering members 30% bonus Avios on credit card miles/points conversions. This is a great time to burn those miles/points from your Citi cards!

Be sure to initiate your transfers early, so that you do not miss out on the bonus if there are any delays with the conversion. As this offer is ending on the 10th of November, I recommend initiating the conversion by the 3rd, to be extra sure that the Avios arrive in your Qatar Airways account on time.
