Which cards are in my wallet? (Aug 2020)

Being in the Miles Game means occasionally changing the content of your wallet to accumulate the maximum amount of miles/points for all your usual spending. Suitesmile has an up-to-date page of the best cards for each spending category.

I also take advantage of credit card sign-up bonuses (whenever I can) to receive free cash and miles. I am currently holding a total of 16 credit cards and 8 of them (listed below) are key to me. There has been quite a number of changes since the previous edition of Which cards are in my wallet? in January 2020.

What’s changed?

I am still keeping Citi Prestige in my drawer as I impatiently wait to travel again. I have since gotten rid of cards like UOB One and OCBC Titanium Rewards as they are no longer useful. I have also downgraded my AMEX Krisflyer Ascend to the normal (blue) version.

HSBC Revolution underwent a major overhaul just a few days ago and I personally feel that it is the most important credit card in Singapore right now. If you are new to credit cards and are looking to just use one credit card for everything, this is the one to get.

GrabPay Mastercard has become almost useless in the past year. However, it is still the best card to use for Insurance and Education payments as you can receive up to 3% of cashback by topping it up with AMEX True Cashback. These categories are in the exclusion lists of most credit cards (no points/miles).

  1. Hi Fai, given the bleak outlook on travel, is it worth holding on to my accumulated miles or should i redeem my rewards now? Do you think that redemption of miles wuld be challenging in future?

    • Hi Maeve,

I would hold on to them if they are not expiring soon. I can’t see airlines devaluing their award charts immediately once world travel fully (but slowly) opens up.

I can imagine a lot of travellers itching to redeem their miles on flights once the travel advisory is lifted, country by country. My guess is as good as yours but you are probably right. There may be very high demand for premium airline seats as more flights return and this can make it challenging in looking for award availability. This is not a problem for me as most of my miles are in Cathay and Alaska and both FFPs allow easy extension of my miles validity.

  2. Recently I got an offer to upgrade my AMEX Krisflyer (blue) to Ascend. I was mulling over it but after reading your post I guess I will not take up the offer. Haha.
