Is KrisFlyer Silver/Gold status worth it?

Frequent flyer statuses have very specific use-cases, and it really depends on what type of traveller you are. But, for most people, no, it is not worth it.

tl;dr: As these benefits are usually already-included for Business/First Class travel. They are most useful only if you fly in Economy/Premium Economy Class a lot, with Star Alliance airlines.

Let’s have a look at the key benefits of KrisFlyer Silver and Gold statuses. These benefits can only be used when flying with a Star Alliance airline, regardless of the class of travel, award flights included.

In my opinion, the KrisFlyer Silver status is not worth any effort in qualification, while the Gold status may be useful for some travellers with specific travel patterns.

Frequent flyer status benefits are not useful for me because of my travel pattern, preferences and budget:

  • I hold the Citi Prestige credit card, which comes with unlimited airport lounge access worldwide (+1 guest), regardless of airline and class of travel
  • When flying short haul in Economy Class, I want the best value. I have no problems flying in budget airlines (~50% – 70% cheaper than Singapore Airlines)
  • When flying long haul in Economy Class, I prefer flying in full-service airlines, and I want the freedom to choose the airline that offers the best value. Other good airlines like Qatar Airways and Emirates are often cheaper, and it simply doesn’t make sense (for me) to splurge on Economy Class
  • I’m a light traveller, never needed more than the checked baggage allowance

Cheapest ways to clock 4 flights on SQ

As mentioned above, Marriott Platinum, Titanium and Ambassador members can get KrisFlyer Gold status after registering and taking 4 Singapore Airlines flights within 6 months.

If you feel that KrisFlyer Gold status is useful for you, here are some cheap ways to clock 4 flights on Singapore Airlines (you only need to complete one of these):

  • 2x Roundtrip Singapore – Kuala Lumpur: S$356 (S$178 x2)
  • 1x Roundtrip Jakarta – Penang/Kuala Lumpur: S$257
  • 1x Roundtrip Surabaya – Penang/Kuala Lumpur: S$234

Bottom line

Marriott Bonvoy and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer are offering a reciprocal status match and fast track program.

In my opinion, the best status that can be received through this program is easily Marriott Bonvoy Platinum. KrisFlyer Gold can be useful to those with specific travel patterns.

As a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium member who is a KrisFlyer Silver member, I have the option of spending around S$356 (and a day of my life) for a mileage-run to achieve the KrisFlyer Gold status.

While it may sound attractive to some, I honestly do not see any use for it, based on my travel patterns.

I’ve had a recent opportunity to match my Marriott status to United Gold (Star Alliance Gold) and visited the KrisFlyer Gold Lounge in Changi Airport Terminal 3. If anything, it further confirmed my point that a Star Alliance Gold status is not useful to me. Disappointingly, food served in the lounge was of a similar standard to what is served in Priority Pass lounges in the terminal.

  1. Hi, I am Marriott Gold Elite (lifetime silver elite) and Krisflyer Elite Gold (expiring Apr 2024). I’m likely unable to accumulate the required KF Elite miles by Apr to keep my gold status. So should I let it run its course, then after, aim to clock 4 SQ flights so that I can get KF Elite Gold status again?

is it suitable for member who want to stay as Gold Member? how about member who want to accelerate to Platinum with 10 night stay, is it ok if i matched to MB Gold today, but achieve 10night stay to platinum in 2024?

    Thank you

    • Hi Sufyan, I don’t see it covered in the T&C, but would personally play it safe by registering and clocking the nights from Jan 2024.
