Great Deal: One-Way Kuala Lumpur to Singapore on Scoot for S$10, other routes from S$2

As shared this morning by matthew in Suitesmile Chat, Trip.com is running an offer for flight bookings made through its mobile app, targeted towards United Kingdom-based travellers (but can be abused used by us).

Key points to note

• Discounts only available on Trip.com’s mobile app
• Set your app’s region to United Kingdom
• Get £5 off air fares under £100 (~S$8.50 off)
• Get £10 off air fares over £100 (~S$17 off)
• No promo code needed; discounts applied instantly

Great fares to consider

This offer is best used on already-cheap flights/routes (i.e. nothing exciting about saving $7 for an $800 flight).

If you are flying roundtrip, make 2 separate bookings, to use the offer twice.

Because of the high airport tax (>S$60), budget flights departing from Singapore’s Changi Airport are usually more expensive (less appealing). Inbound flights to Singapore are not affected by this.

Additional note: Checked baggage is usually excluded from base fares, when flying with a low-cost carrier.

How to find these fares?

Lowest air fares can be browsed through the calendar view in Trip.com’s mobile app. However, it is not usually accurate and does not show the lowest fares of every date.

Here’s an easier way to do it:

1. Search for a low fare through the calendar view in Google Flights first
2. Replicate the search in Trip.com’s mobile app
3. Complete the booking in Trip.com’s mobile app

This is a great fuss-free card that offers a great earn rate on key spending categories for most people, without any annual fee to worry about.

There’s a little quirk though. To transfer HSBC points to Frequent Flyer Programs, cardholders need to enroll in HSBC’s Mileage Programme, which costs $43.20 annually. Upon enrollment, cardholders can make unlimited points transfers, at no additional cost. (FYI: Most other cards charge about $25 fee per transfer)

Not into Miles or travel-hacking? Redeem your points for 2.5% cashback instead, on the aforementioned spending categories!

The biggest drawback is that DBS points earned on this card have an expiry term of just 1 year. With a minimum transfer block of 5,000 points (10,000 miles), cardholders often find themselves with expiring “orphan” points of under 5,000, that can only be redeemed for low-value items like mall/dining vouchers.

Bottom line

This offer, bookable with a simple region switch on Trip.com’s mobile app, is useful for already-cheap air fares. To stay on the winning side, it is best used for short trips without checked baggage add-ons.

Singapore-based travellers may consider flying out of Johor Bahru’s Senai airport to a preferred city, before returning home via Changi Airport to enjoy these fares.

I am also able to see some of these fares during the December 2023 and June 2024 holiday periods!
