Is it a good idea to convert miles to Marriott points?

It is a horrible idea.

Remember, Marriott points can be converted to airline miles at a more favourable ratio of 60k Marriott points to 25k airline miles. This reversed conversion makes little sense as Marriott points are worth way lesser than airline miles.

When can this be useful?

Singapore-based travellers enjoy very good credit card earn rates on almost any spending category.

However, other than with Citi cards, our credit card miles/points are not very flexible, as they can mostly only be converted to Krisflyer or Asia Miles.

While Asia Miles’ expiry can be easily extended with activity, Krisflyer miles have a fixed expiry term of just 3 years.

With this option, Krisflyer members have the last-resort option of converting Krisflyer miles to Marriott points if they are near expiry and find it hard to find a good Saver redemption option.

Personally, if it comes down to it, I would rather spend a night at the amazing The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place for up to 40k Marriott points, than redeem roundtrip short-haul Business Class flights on Singapore Airlines to Thailand for 80k Krisflyer miles (Advantage).

Bottom line

Miles from selected airlines can now be converted to Marriott points, at poor value.

This can be a good last-resort option for miles from frequent flyer programs with fixed-expiry terms.
