I’ve mentioned in the past that Qatar Airways is the final missing piece in an outstanding list of Alaska Airline’s partners. I was cautiously happy when news came out that Alaska is joining oneworld as it would connect them with Qatar Airways. Alaska Airlines is now expected to officially join oneworld alliance by 31 March 2021.
As if that is not soon enough, Qatar Airways, a member of oneworld alliance, has now launched a partnership with Alaska Airlines, 3 months before Alaska Airlines is supposed to join oneworld alliance.
Earning miles
From 15 December 2020, you will be able to earn Alaska miles from your Qatar Airways flights and earn rates are pretty good.
I still do not see my epic Qatar Airways Business Class itinerary happening in July 2021 but if it does go ahead, I would earn enough Alaska miles from those flights to fly First Class on Cathay Pacific from Singapore to North America!
Redeem miles
As of now, you cannot redeem Alaska miles for Qatar flights. I will share an update when this is possible.
Best ways to spend Alaska miles
Bottom line
This is great news. I don’t know about you but I love having more options on where to earn and spend my miles. With this partnership, all the top oneworld airlines are now partners with Alaska Airlines.
Just a few months ago, I would only credit my Qatar flights to Cathay’s Asia Miles. But I now have 2 additional options!
As Qatar Airways’ frequent flyer program (FFP) is awesome again, you should not blindly credit all your Qatar Airways flights to Alaska. To make a better, high-value decision, think about your next redemption. If you are likely flying to Europe next, credit your Qatar flights to Qatar’s FFP for the best Business Class seat. If you are flying to North America in the near future, credit your Qatar flights to Alaska’s FFP to fly in Cathay Pacific’s Business Class for only 50,000 miles.
