Alaska Airlines is offering up to 60% bonus on miles purchases from now till 1459 hours on 1 November 2020. As usual, to find out if a points/miles sale is good, ignore the term “60% bonus”. You should only care about the actual price-per-mile that is being offered after accounting for bonuses and USDSGD exchange rate. With a 50% bonus, you will be paying S$0.0234 per mile with this sale. This is about 6% more expensive than my valuation of $0.022.

Because of the weakening US dollar, this is the cheapest targeted sale of Alaska miles, ever. Cheaper than the 60% targeted bonus that I shared in June 2020.

I am finally targeted for 60% bonus!

To unlock a 60% bonus, I need to purchase a minimum of 40,000 miles (+24,000 bonus).

Alaska Airlines sweet spots at $0.023 a mile

I have recently wrote an article listing the sweet spots of Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan. Any routes listed in the table above would give you incredible value. I have made changes in the table to reflect a “Buy Miles” rate of $0.023 per mile.

You can now buy miles to fly Business to Japan with just $518 worth of miles and also, Business to USA at $1,150. Fantastic value.

Which card to use?

Of course, if you are purchasing these miles, you want to earn even more miles by using the right credit cards.

Citibank Rewards

Earn rate: 4 miles per dollar
Min. monthly spend for earn rate: –
Max. monthly spend for earn rate: $1,000

UOB Visa Signature

Earn rate: 4 miles per dollar
Min. monthly spend for earn rate: $1,000
Max. monthly spend for earn rate: $2,000

Conclusion

The usual rule-of-thumb applies; I do not recommend buying miles/points if you do not intend to use them in the foreseeable future. I mentioned in previous sales that I am only a buyer if targeted with a 60% bonus. I will be loading up with the minimum 40,000 miles (+24,000 bonus) this time round and will be using my UOB Visa Signature credit card for this purchase.

For obvious reasons, now is not a good time to fly. However, Alaska miles do not expire as long as there is at least one activity (easy to achieve with Mileage Plan Shopping) every 24 months. How often can you get the opportunity to fly ultra long-haul in First Class for just S$1,610? This ticket usually sells for about $8,500.
