Alaska Airlines is offering 50% bonus on miles purchases from now till 1459 hours on 21 September 2020. As usual, to find out if a points/miles sale is good, ignore the term “50% bonus”. You should only care about the actual price-per-mile that is being offered after accounting for bonuses and USDSGD exchange rate. With a 50% bonus, you will be paying S$0.025 per mile with this sale. This is about 14% more expensive than my valuation of $0.022. Because of the weaker USD, this is the cheapest non-targeted sale of Alaska miles, ever.

To receive a 50% bonus, you will have to purchase a minimum of 35,000 miles (+17,500 bonus).

What is Alaska miles? Why do I value it more than Krisflyer? How to accumulate them? How to use them?

Alaska Airlines sweet spots

I have recently wrote an article listing the sweet spots of Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan. Any routes listed in the table above would give you incredible value. I have made changes in the table to reflect a “Buy Miles” rate of $0.025 per mile.

You can now buy miles to fly Business to Japan with just $563 worth of miles and also, Business to USA at $1,250. Fantastic value.

Which card to use?

Of course, if you are purchasing these miles, you want to earn even more miles by using the right credit cards.

Max. monthly spend for earn rate: $1,000

UOB Visa Signature

Conclusion

The usual rule-of-thumb applies; I do not recommend buying miles/points if you do not intend to use them in the foreseeable future.

For obvious reasons, now is not a good time to fly. However, Alaska miles do not expire as long as there is at least one activity every 24 months. How often can you get the opportunity to fly ultra long-haul in First Class for just S$1,750? This ticket usually sells for about $8,500.
