Alaska Airlines is offering 40% to 50% bonus on miles purchases from now till 1459 hours on 27 Aug 2020. As usual, ignore the term “50% bonus”. You should only care about the actual price-per-mile that is being offered after accounting for bonuses and USDSGD exchange rate. If you are targeted for a 50% bonus, it simply means that you can now buy Alaska miles at S$0.0255 each. This is 16% more expensive than my valuation of $0.022 but is also one of the better sales of Alaska miles.

What is Alaska miles? Why do I value it more than Krisflyer? How to accumulate them? How to use them?

Only 40% bonus for me

Again, I am not targeted for a higher bonus. I will not be buying Alaska miles this time as I do not have any urgent use for them.

Check if you are targeted for a 50% bonus.

Alaska Airlines sweet spots

I have recently wrote an article listing the sweet spots of Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan. Any routes listed in the table above would give you incredible value. I have made changes in the table to reflect a “Buy Miles” rate of $0.0255 per mile.

You can now buy miles to fly Business to Japan with just $574 worth of miles and also, Business to USA at $1,275. Fantastic value.

Which card to use?

Of course, if you are purchasing these miles, you want to earn even more miles by using the right credit cards.

Conclusion

The usual rule-of-thumb applies; I do not recommend buying miles/points if you do not intend to use them in the foreseeable future. For obvious reasons, now is not a good time to fly.

Many things can happen to Alaska Airlines in the coming months. It can go bust. It can also devalue its Frequent Flyer Program (FFP), Mileage Plan; although that would be a really self-stabbing move to do it during this period of uncertainty when most airlines are trying to decorate their FFPs with status extensions and more.

Alaska miles do not expire as long as there is at least one activity every 24 months. How often can you get the opportunity to fly ultra long-haul in First Class for just S$1,785? This ticket usually sells for about $8,500.
