The route

This fare works for Business Class flights on Japan Airlines from Vancouver, Canada to Bali, Indonesia with stopovers in Tokyo and Jakarta. You will need to make the same stopover on your way back to Vancouver. It is not easy to take advantage of this deal from Singapore but with good planning and creativity, you can.

For example, you can fly to Vancouver on your own, explore the east coast of Canada and fly to Bali after a week. You can then spend a few days in Bali before going home to Singapore. A couple of months later, you can fly to Bali again to catch the other flight to Vancouver and go further south to San Francisco, USA before flying home from there. Sample itinerary below!

The seat

You will be flying in a Boeing 767-300ER with JAL’s Sky Suite II which is a Thompson Vantage XL seat. The seats are arrange in a staggered layout and is very spacious.

Where to credit?

You will be booked into fare class ‘X’ for the flights between Vancouver and Tokyo and fare class ‘C’ for the flight between Tokyo and Jakarta. Both give you a lovely 225% accrual if you credit to Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan. There are other frequent flyer programs that you can credit to but none of them would give you better value than Alaska. If you do not hold a status with Alaska, you will get over 37,000 miles (worth $814) for the whole trip!

What can you do with 37,000 Alaska miles? You can purchase an additional 13,000 miles in future for about $350 and that would be enough for another flight to North America in Cathay Pacific’s Business Class. That’s a lot of long-haul flights in Business Class for $1,198!

If you are an Alaska MVP Gold member like me, you will end up with over 53,000 miles. I should end up with about 161,000 miles after completing these 3 trips if I can explain what I am doing to the immigration officer at the Canadian border. 😛

What is Alaska miles? Why do I value it more than Krisflyer? How to accumulate them? How to use them?

Conclusion

I know that everyone is itching to make travel plans. However, do understand that the airline may not honour this rate and refund your money. Do not make any hotel bookings right away. Also, we do not know when the COVID-19 situation will end. I’ll leave it to you to make the prediction. April 2021 is quite a long way from now, right?
