Alaska Airlines is offering 40% to 60% bonus on miles purchases from now till 1459 hours on 1 June 2020. As usual, ignore the term “60% bonus”. You should only care about the actual price-per-mile that is being offered. If you are targeted for a 60% bonus, it simply means that you can now buy Alaska miles at S$0.025 each. This is “only” 14% more expensive than my valuation of $0.022. I said “only” because if you are targeted for a 60% bonus, it is the cheapest sale of Alaska miles, ever!

What is Alaska miles? Why do I value it more than Krisflyer? How to accumulate them? How to use them?

Only 40% bonus for me

Sadly, I am not targeted for a 60% bonus this time and will certainly not buy Alaska miles at S$0.028 each as I do not have any urgent use for them. Looking at the purchase information below, there will be no taxes chargeable this time! Check if you are targeted for a 60% bonus.

Unlock Business/First Class seats at huge discounts

If you are targeted for a 60% bonus, you can fly to Japan on Cathay Pacific’s Business Class with 22,500 miles (S$563) each way. This flight usually cost over S$2,000, hence, giving you a nice 72% discount with this deal. Do note that you will need a stopover at Hong Kong when you fly Cathay Pacific. This means that you can enjoy more free food and drinks at Cathay’s Business Class Lounge in HKG before continuing your journey to Japan. If you prefer to fly direct, you may book Japan Airlines instead for 25,000 miles (S$625) each way.

If you are looking to fly further, you can also book Business Class flights to US cities for only 50,000 miles (S$1,250) each way or First Class for only 70,000 miles (S$1,750) each way.

What if you want to fly Singapore Airlines First Class? You can do so with as little as 35,000 miles (S$875) to Hong Kong.

Conclusion

The usual rule-of-thumb applies; I do not recommend buying miles/points if you do not intend to use them in the foreseeable future. For obvious reasons, now is not a good time to fly.

Many things can happen to Alaska Airlines in the coming months. It can go bust. It can also devalue its Frequent Flyer Program (FFP), Mileage Plan; although that would be a really self-stabbing move to do it during this period of uncertainty when most airlines are trying to decorate their FFPs with status extensions and more.

Alaska miles do not expire as long as there is at least one activity every 24 months. How often can you get the opportunity to fly ultra long-haul in First Class for just S$1,750? This ticket usually sells for about $11,000. I would have accepted the risks and bought these miles if I was targeted for a 60% bonus.
