Cathay Pacific’s Business Class

Alaska Airlines is offering a 40% bonus on miles purchases from now till 1459 hours on 26 Mar 2020. As usual, ignore the term “40% bonus”. You should only care about the actual price-per-mile that is being offered. This offer means that you can now buy Alaska miles at S$0.031 each. This is 41% more expensive than my valuation of $0.022 and is not Alaska’s best sale historically.

What is Alaska miles? Why do I value it more than Krisflyer? How to accumulate them? How to use them?

With this offer, you can fly to Japan on Cathay Pacific’s Business Class with 22,500 miles (S$698) each way. This flight usually cost over S$2,000, hence, giving you a nice 65% discount with this deal. Do note that you will need a stopover at Hong Kong when you fly Cathay Pacific. This means that you can enjoy more free food at Cathay’s Business Class Lounge in HKG before continuing your journey to Japan. If you prefer to fly direct, you may book Japan Airlines instead for 25,000 miles (S$775) each way.

If you are looking to fly further, you can also book Business Class flights to US cities for only 50,000 miles (S$1,550) each way or First Class for only 70,000 miles (S$2,170) each way.

What if you want to fly Singapore Airlines First Class? You can do so with as little as 35,000 miles (S$1,085) to Hong Kong.

Conclusion

The usual rule-of-thumb applies; I do not recommend buying miles/points if you do not intend to use them in the foreseeable future. For obvious reasons, now is not a good time to fly. On top of that, this sale does not give you the best value because of the currency fluctuation. Historically, Alaska offers a 50% bonus between May and September. Unless if you need the miles urgently, you will be better off waiting for for a couple of months.
