What is UOB Payment Facility?

UOB Payment Facility, offered by UOB Singapore, can be used to pay expenses like bills, rent, insurance premiums, taxes, school fees and more.

Cardholders can earn miles/points for the payments made, but will be charged a small fee.

Because of this fee, cardholders are paying a little more than their actual expense, in order to earn miles. Hence, by using UOB Payment Facility, cardholders are essentially “buying” miles.

Is it better than Citi PayAll?

Compared to Citi PayAll, UOB Payment Facility is less restrictive, as it can be used to pay yourself (no need to pay for an actual bill). Yes, UOB doesn’t care what you use the money for. But keep in mind that UOB miles/points are less flexible.

Key promo terms

  • Earn rate: UNI$ 2.5 per $5 (1 mpd), regardless of card
  • Application required
  • No minimum transaction amount
  • Only principal UOB credit cardholders qualify
  • Approved amount will be transferred to your bank account (can be a non-UOB bank account)
  • Approved amount cannot be more than 95% of your card’s credit limit (tip: pre-pay your card to increase credit limit)
  • There is no limit to the number of miles that you can buy through UOB Payment Facility
  • Miles will be credited to your credit card account as soon as the transactions are posted
  • UOB UNI$ can only be transferred to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • Buying miles through an installment plan comes with a much higher fee (avoid this)

How does it work?

The process to receive miles from payments through UOB Payment Facility is pretty straightforward:

  1. Apply for UOB Payment Facility with your card, personal and bank account details
  2. Wait 4 to 6 working days for the outcome of your application
  3. Once approved, the money will be:
    • Charged to your UOB card (incl. fee)
    • Credited to your bank account
  4. Miles (UNI$) will be credited once the transaction is posted in your card

✍️ Reminder: UNI$ 1 = 2 miles

Is this a good deal?

From time to time, travellers can purchase miles through good offers from great Frequent Flyer Programs (FFPs) like Aeroplan and the Avios family. This can be as cheap as 1.4 to 1.5 cents (SGD) per mile, and the route that you want to fly on may even have a lower award rate on those FFPs. Plus, you can earn even more miles/cashback when purchasing those miles, by using the right credit cards.

With that in mind, it’s not difficult to calculate if buying KrisFlyer or Asia Miles through this promo is worth it to YOU.

All you have to do is:

  1. Find out the award rate for the flight that you’re aiming for
  2. Find out the taxes/fees
  3. Calculate how much it costs to purchase those miles

Other use cases

Cardholders don’t need to purchase the entire amount of miles required to make an award booking. UOB Payment Facility is also great for topping up smaller amounts to reach the amount required to transfer UNI$ to FFPs.

Also, if you time the payment well (just after statement date), you can enjoy a longer credit period before the card’s following due date, perhaps to use the money to enjoy promos on deposit accounts like this one.
