What is CardUp? How does it work?

CardUp is a bill payment service (like Citi PayAll and UOB Payment Facility) where users can earn miles on payment categories that are usually excluded from earning credit card miles or cashback, like mortgage, rent, insurance premiums, taxes and school fees.

CardUp charges a 2.6% admin fee for this service, but users can often get a discounted fee when using the promo codes shared in this page.

Because of this fee, cardholders will be paying a little more than their actual expense to earn miles. Hence, when using CardUp, cardholders are essentially “buying” miles, and importantly, with conditions (actual bills required). This is unlike UOB Payment Facility, which is pretty-much a no-questions-asked method of buying miles.

Note: CardUp transactions are coded as MCC 7399 (Business Services Not Elsewhere Classified). Presently, only HSBC credit cards exclude this Merchant Category Code.

How it works

It’s really easy to set up a payment on CardUp:

1. Sign up for a free CardUp account
2. Enter your payment details and upload supporting documents (remember to use a promo code listed in this page!)
3. CardUp charges your credit card (bill amount + admin fee)
4. CardUp sends the money to the recipient’s bank account
5. You earn miles by using an eligible card

P.S. You earn miles on CardUp’s admin fee as well (unlike Citi PayAll).
