Citibank is running a limited-time sign-up promotion for the Citi PremierMiles Card, which I consider one of the best general spending credit cards in Singapore.

What kinds of transactions qualify for the minimum spending requirements?
Retail spending for goods and services is the safest way to guarantee that you meet the minimum spending requirement, and receive the advertised sign-up bonuses. This includes dining, groceries, ride-hailing, food delivery, online or in-person shopping, flight and hotel spending.

⚠️ Transactions that may not qualify include: Phone bills, business/professional services (Google/Facebook ads), hospital/clinic bills.

❌ Transactions that will not qualify include: Utility bills, school fees, e-wallet top-ups and payments to financial institutions (e.g. banks, brokerages).

Please refer to each card’s terms and conditions for the full list of exclusions.

What if I have difficulty meeting the minimum spending requirements?
The simplest, tried-and-tested way to meet a credit card minimum spending requirement is by purchasing supermarket vouchers at NTUC Fairprice or Dairy Farm (Giant, Cold Storage) outlets.

These vouchers can be used for your grocery needs in future.

Definition of a new cardholder
A new cardholder of Citibank is someone who has not held a credit card (as a principal cardholder) issued by Citibank Singapore in the past 12 months.

If you had cancelled your last Citibank credit card more than 12 months ago, you will qualify as a new cardholder and can enjoy these sign-up bonuses.

Citi miles are more valuable

Miles earned on the Citi PremierMiles Card give you far greater flexibility as compared to those earned through credit cards of other Singapore banks, mainly because:

  • Citi miles never expire
Keep the miles in your card for as long as you want; transfer to a preferred FFP only when you’re ready to make an award redemption.
  • Get access to 9 useful frequent flyer programs
More award availability, more award rates to compare.

Is it worth paying the first-year annual fee?

First, you’d need to calculate your cost per mile by dividing the annual fee by the number of additional miles you receive.

Annual fee: S$196.20
Additional miles: 22,000 (30,000 minus 8,000)
Cost per mile: 0.89 cents

Cardholders are encouraged to have their own valuation of miles, depending on their award goals. In general, 0.89 cents is a good price to pay for Citi miles, as they give you access to Frequent Flyer Programs (FFPs) with low award rates to fly in Business Class to Japan/S. Korea, Europe and, of course, the KrisFlyer sweet spots.

Is the Citi PremierMiles Card good?

As covered in the beginner’s guide of the Miles Game, cards that are marketed as “Miles” or “Travel” cards should be used as a last resort, due to abysmal earn rates.

Citi PremierMiles Card earns just 1.2 miles per dollar (mpd) on SGD transactions and 2.2 mpd on foreign currency transactions (which unfortunately comes with a 3.25% FX junk fee). These earn rates are uncapped, but the reality is that you’d probably take forever to accumulate enough miles for a meaningful award redemption.

Seasoned travel hackers know that the real “Miles” cards are NOT those that are marketed as Miles/Travel cards; the real kings are Rewards cards (offered by various banks) that give you a far greater earn rate of 4 mpd, albeit with monthly caps.

In summary, I recommend using this Citi PremierMiles Card only for its good sign-up bonus, free airport lounge benefit and as a last resort (when all your 4 mpd cards are maxed out).

Here’s a quick look at the key benefits of the Citi PremierMiles Card:
