Singapore banks frequently offer great credit card sign-up promos for new credit card holders to try their products.
In this complete guide, I’ll share how to maximize credit card sign-up promos for cash and gadgets, and the best practices to rinse and repeat the process for continuous rewards.
At a Glance: How to maximize credit card sign-up promos
Receive cash and gadgets by meeting the minimum spending requirements from every bank’s credit card sign-up promos.
Stop, hold and cancel
No useful benefits? Stop using the card after meeting the minimum spend. Hold it through any minimum period. Cancel before the annual fee hits.
Rinse and repeat
After 6-12 months, you’d qualify as a “new cardholder” again. Rinse and repeat to continuously enjoy credit card sign-up gifts.
Discipline is crucial
When holding multiple credit cards, you need to keep proper records of key card details (e.g. approval date, statement due date etc.) and always pay off your credit card bills in full and on time.

Who qualifies for credit cards?
In Singapore, credit cards come with age and income requirements which vary by bank and products offered.
Here are the typical (basic) pre-requisites to apply for credit cards in Singapore:
- Age: 21 years and above
- Annual Income:
- Singaporeans & PRs (under 55 years): At least S$30,000 (S$2,500/month)
- Singaporeans & PRs (55 years and above): At least S$15,000 (S$1,250/month)
- Foreigners: Varies (typically S$40,000 and above)

Who qualifies for credit card sign-up bonuses?
In most cases, the best credit card sign-up bonuses are those that are available for new credit card holders of the bank.
Each bank may define it slightly differently but in general, “new cardholder” means:
- Someone who hasn’t held any credit card with the bank as a principal credit card member in the past XX months
In layman’s terms, you should qualify if you:
✅ Only had a debit card with the bank
✅ Only had a credit card as a supplementary cardholder
✅ Cancelled your last credit card with the bank more than XX months ago
Renewing “new cardholder” status
Each credit card provider has different “hiatus period” requirements before someone regains their “new cardholder” status.
Here’s how long it takes to renew your “new cardholder” status for each bank in Singapore:
| Bank | How long to renew “new cardholder” status |
|---|---|
| American Express | 12 months |
| CIMB | 12 months |
| Citibank | 12 months |
| DBS | 12 months |
| HSBC | 12 months |
| Maybank | 9 months |
| OCBC | 12 months |
| Standard Chartered | 12 months |
| UOB | 6 months |
Note: This may change in the future, always check the latest promo terms and conditions.
Track your credit cards
If you’re going to churn credit card sign-up bonuses, keeping proper records of the key details of your credit cards is non-negotiable. If you find it too difficult or time-consuming, credit card sign-up bonus churning is probably not for you.
For financial prudence, it’s best to keep records of each credit card’s:
- Card application date
- Card approval date
- Minimum spending deadline (for sign-up bonus)
- Expected sign-up gift delivery/collection
- Minimum holding period
- Statement date
- Due date
- Cancellation date

Track your credit score
With all the great promos, it’s easy to get carried away and apply for 10 credit cards in one day. But note that each application for a credit facility (e.g. credit card) will impact your credit score. This impact can be stronger if you don’t have a long credit history (young adults) or have a high credit exposure (more on this later).
With each credit card application, you’ll have free access to your latest credit report through Credit Bureau Singapore. It’s good to track your credit score after each application and temporarily pause or slow down your credit card application rate if/when your risk grade hits FF or below.
After a continuous period of on-time credit card bill payments, your score should eventually recover.

Choose a lower credit limit
If the credit card has no benefits that are useful to you, and you have no intention of using it after meeting the minimum spending requirement (to receive the sign-up gift), it’s best to define a lower credit limit during the application.
If you allow the bank to auto-assign the credit limit for you, it’ll likely assign an amount up to 4 times your monthly income (possibly a higher multiplier if you earn over S$120,000/year). This may be too high for a card that you have no intention of using on a day-to-day basis and it’ll increase your overall credit exposure (and affect your credit score).
For sign-up bonus churning, any amount between S$3,000 and S$8,000 worked well for me.
What credit card sign-up gifts can you get?
Now, let’s get to the good part.
Over the years, Suitesmile’s Telegram and WhatsApp subscribers receive alerts on the latest credit card sign-up promos. We’ve seen cash rewards as high as S$500 and sign-up gifts worth as much as S$1,200. There was even an easy deal to receive up to S$599 worth of gifts after spending once (any amount)!

What’s better? Cash, miles or gadgets?
In most cases, cash or miles are most recommended. Gadgets usually look like they are “worth” more, but there are a number of reasons why I usually avoid them as a credit card sign-up gift:
- A gadget’s “worth” is usually the product’s “recommended retail price” (RRP). Often, most shops are selling the same product for 10-30% cheaper.
- Tech gadgets get outdated quickly. As sign-up gift fulfilment takes as long as 5 months, it may be worth less by the time you receive it.
- Samsonite luggages are a common credit card sign-up gift. They can be bought (in brand new condition) for 50-60% cheaper from platforms like Carousell (stay vigilant for scams though!).
Miles, on the other hand, are a little trickier to value, as it depends entirely on your award redemption goals. Just don’t be that person who wastes miles on low-value KrisFlyer Access rates!
tl;dr: Cash should be your default choice, unless if you have very good reasons to choose gadget or miles.

When’s the best time to apply?
It’s difficult to predict the best time to apply for credit card promos but you can have a general idea of the historical best sign-up gifts by searching on Suitesmile’s Telegram channel.
For example, to find out the recent cash offers for HSBC credit cards, simply search “hsbc cash” as follows:

How to qualify for credit card sign-up promos?
To qualify for credit card sign-up promos, there’s usually a minimum spending requirement within a period of time after the card’s approval date. This typically ranges from just 1 transaction of any amount to thousands of dollars within 30 to 60 days.
Retail spending for goods and services is the safest way to guarantee that you meet the minimum spending requirement, and receive the advertised sign-up bonuses. This includes dining, groceries, ride-hailing, food delivery, online or in-person shopping, flight and hotel spending.
⚠️ Transactions that may not qualify include: Phone bills, business/professional services (Google/Facebook ads), hospital/clinic bills.
❌ Transactions that will not qualify include: Utility bills, school fees, e-wallet top-ups and payments to financial institutions (e.g. banks, brokerages).
Please refer to each card’s terms and conditions for the full list of exclusions.
Any hidden catch?
There are usually no hidden rules or conditions to prevent you from receiving your credit card sign-up gifts, and if there are, I’d lay them out clearly in Suitesmile’s credit card sign-up promo pages.
For example, as shown in the Standard Chartered credit card sign-up promo page, the SingSaver option now requires applicants to apply for an additional loan/banking product, which may be a turn-off to most. In this case, the direct-to-bank promo is probably the better option.
Additionally, check the annual fee for each card and if it is automatically waived for the first year. This is also shown clearly in Suitesmile’s credit card pages.
Meet minimum spending requirement early
Most credit card providers only look at the transaction’s posting date when awarding sign-up gifts. This usually ranges from 1-5 days after your actual transaction date.
So, if you need to meet the minimum spending requirement by the 15th of June, it’s best to do so at least 5 days early (by 10th June), so that the transactions are posted in time.
Don’t get caught out! The last thing you want is to miss out on the sign-up promo due to this technicality.
Easy ways to meet minimum spending requirements
What if you don’t have enough natural expenditure to meet the minimum spending requirement by the deadline?
The simplest, tried-and-tested way to meet a credit card minimum spending requirement is by purchasing supermarket vouchers at NTUC FairPrice or Dairy Farm (Giant, Cold Storage) outlets.
These vouchers can be used for your grocery needs in future.
Enjoy other perks that come with the card
Some credit cards (like UOB PRVI Miles and Citi PremierMiles) come with non-spending perks such as complimentary airport lounge entitlement. Feel free to use them while you’re holding the card.
Minimum holding period
Certain credit card sign-up promos define minimum holding/retention periods to qualify for a sign-up gift. Aside from rare cases, this doesn’t usually exceed 12 months. So, if you picked one that comes with a first-year annual fee waiver, you’d be free to cancel it before the second-year annual fee is charged.
Here’s an example of the retention period for a Citibank credit card sign-up promo, as defined by SingSaver in its terms and conditions:
Successful Applicants must ensure that the Eligible Card is valid and in good standing (not cancelled or blocked) (refer to clause 5v above) at the point of fulfilment of the Reward and must retain the Eligible Card and not cancel it for a period of 12 months from the date of approval (the “Retention Period”). SingSaver reserves the right to retract, seek the return of and/or otherwise cancel the Reward if a Successful Applicant cancels the Eligible Card before the expiry of the Retention Period.
Stop using lousy cards after meeting minimum spending
There are not many good miles and cashback cards out there. Don’t feel bad about not using lousy credit cards after you’ve met the minimum spending requirement. Just remember to pay off your credit card bill in full while you wait to receive the sign-up gift.
Cancel unused credit cards
There is no point in holding a credit card with poor benefits beyond the minimum holding period, especially those that come with annual fees.
Simply call in to cancel the credit card, after checking that you’ve paid off the latest statement in full, of course.
For records, remember to add the card cancellation date to your credit card management sheet.

Re-apply as a new cardholder (again)
After you’ve cancelled the credit card, add a Google Calendar event for the day that you’re considered a new cardholder of the bank again (6-12 months, depending on bank).
From past experiences, credit card providers may take up to a week to fully process my credit card cancellation. So, to be extra safe, I’d usually apply for the credit card (again) at least 2 weeks after my “new cardholder” status is expected to be refreshed.
Enjoy sign-up bonuses from different banks
Why stop at one? As long as you have some natural spending to make, you might as well enjoy more lucrative sign-up gifts from a different credit card provider.
As a reminder, holding multiple credit cards at the same time requires discipline. Track your credit cards diligently and always pay off the bills fully.
Any downsides to credit card sign-up bonus churning?
Aside from the extra work required to keep track of the multiple credit cards that you hold, there are no obvious downsides to churning credit card sign-up bonuses.
Banks may be more reluctant to approve future applications from you, if all you do is sign up and cancel after a year. But from my experience in applying for 90+ credit cards in the past 11 years, it’s not been an issue. Just remember to diligently pay off all your credit card bills in full and before the due dates.

Which Singapore banks have the best credit cards?
Obviously, credit card providers with less-useful credit cards are the best to churn with, as you’re not committed to their “ecosystem” of miles and/or cashback.
Here’s a quick overview of the total number of useful Miles and Cashback credit cards from each Singapore bank (in my opinion):
| Bank | No. of useful credit cards |
|---|---|
| American Express | 1 |
| CIMB | 0 |
| Citibank | 6 |
| DBS | 6 |
| HSBC | 4 |
| Maybank | 7 |
| OCBC | 1 |
| Standard Chartered | 1 |
| Trust Bank | 1 |
| UOB | 8 |
