Redeem KrisFlyer Miles on Scoot: ‘Worth It’ Calculator & Guide

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer members can now redeem KrisFlyer miles for Scoot flights by referring to an award chart, which, in the Miles World, generally offers far better value than offsetting a cash fare with miles.

Saver vs Advantage

Scoot flights can be booked with Saver and Advantage rates, similar to how Singapore Airlines flights can be booked with KrisFlyer miles.

  • Saver
Lower award rates, fewer seats released per flight, best value
  • Advantage
Higher award rates, more seats released per flight, worse value

As with SQ flights, popular destinations (Japan, S. Korea) and dates (school holidays, weekends) will most-likely be priced with Advantage rates.

Is it worth it to redeem KrisFlyer Miles for Scoot?

Every travel hacker should have a rough idea of how much a KrisFlyer mile is worth to them. A good range is between 1 and 2 cents; I personally value it at 1.5 cents each.

With that in mind, when redeeming KrisFlyer miles with under 1 cent per mile (cpm) in value, it’s generally regarded as a poor redemption, while 3 cpm and above is considered great (the higher, the better).

Note: This is not a hard rule. If you have expiring KrisFlyer miles, redeem them even if the cpm value is poor. You’d also probably want to reevaluate your miles and credit card strategy, to avoid making poor-value miles redemptions in future.

The formula to calculate the cpm for Scoot flights is as follows:

(Cash fare [minus] taxes/fees of miles redemption) [divide by] miles required = cpm

For example: (S$150 – S$65.20) / 2,000 = 4.24 cents per mile

⚠️ Beware of common value trap

Inexperienced travel hackers tend to get caught in a value trap when calculating the cpm value of an award redemption. For example, for a one-way flight to Bangkok that costs S$400 in cash, you’d get a “great” cpm value of 6.09 cents when redeeming 5,500 miles for a Scoot Advantage award. The reality is that the typical ‘budget airline’ fare for this route is only S$100.

The high fare is most likely linked to poor/late planning (school holidays, peak periods etc.). Unless you have absolutely no choice but to fly on that particular date or time, this is not a good miles redemption, despite the high cpm value.

In other words, cpm value is only meaningful if you’d actually be willing to pay that cash fare.
