Maybank Man Utd Card changing how you earn Miles when the team wins…and draws?!

Maybank has announced upcoming “enhancements” to the Maybank Manchester United Platinum Visa Card that will affect how cardholders earn miles/points on their spending.

Let’s see if this card has a place in your wallet, whether or not you’re a Man Utd fan.

New earn rates

From 15 Aug 2025, here’s how Maybank Man Utd cardholders can earn miles with the card:

  • Standard earn rate: 1.12 mpd (any currency, uncapped)
  • When Man Utd draws: 1.6 mpd (any currency, capped at S$2,000 per day, 1 draw match per calendar month)
  • When Man Utd wins: 2.8 mpd (any currency, capped at S$2,000 per day)
  • No more cashback

Note: Miles are earned as TREATS points, awarded in every S$5 block of spending. 2.5 TREATS points can be converted to 1 Mile on selected frequent flyer programs.

What counts as a Match Day?

The new earn rates will kick off in time for the 2025/2026 season, which runs from 15 Aug 2025 till 24 May 2026.

A qualifying match day is:

  • A Man Utd Premier League match day (check official fixtures)
  • Only the United Kingdom day of the kick-off time counts (if match starts at 1am on 10 Feb 2026 in Singapore, the match day is actually 9 Feb 2026 as UK time is 8-9 hours behind)

So, the problem is pretty clear:

  • Man Utd doesn’t always win (in the past 12 years)
  • Match days are usually late at night SG time, so you’d probably need to spend before the match ends

If you’d like to spend only on days when Man Utd is guaranteed to win, look out for earlier kick-off timings of around 7 or 8pm SG time. These matches would end by midnight, and you’d be able to guarantee a higher earn rate if Man Utd wins that match.

Otherwise, it’s basically a gamble with lousy reward.

Earn 0.4 mpd on selected categories

Cardholders can also earn an uncapped 0.4 mpd on SGD spending on the following commonly-excluded spending categories, but I honestly wouldn’t bother, as there are better cards out there for:

It is also worth pointing out that the 0.4 mpd earn rate on these special categories will not be increased whenever Man Utd wins or draws.

New card design

The Manchester United Card will have a new card face, for applications and renewals from 15 Aug 2025. To be honest, even the design is underwhelming.

Instead of actually putting effort in one, the team in charge decided to simply slap a stock photo of Old Trafford (Man Utd’s stadium) in the background.

Here’s a quick comparison between the old and new card faces:

Should you get the Maybank Man Utd Card?

Firstly, I don’t see any use cases of this card for foreign currency or overseas spending. With a 3.25% foreign currency junk fee, even a Man Utd win cannot save this card from being suboptimal for non-SGD usage.

A Man Utd draw, however, gives cardholders a “healthier” 1.6 mpd earn rate (capped at S$2,000 per day, limited to 1 draw match per month) if used for SGD spending. Even so, this card should be a last resort, until you’ve exhausted the monthly limits on other superior 4 mpd cards.

If Man Utd wins, cardholders get 2.8 mpd capped at S$2,000 per day. Again, useful only for SGD spending, but should still be a last resort, until you’ve exhausted the monthly limits on other superior 4 mpd cards.

Even the 0.4 mpd earn rate on the special categories is highly passable. As a reminder from Miles Game 101, don’t be blinded by miles. Use superior cashback cards when you have the chance. 0.4 mpd would not get you anywhere.

This card is pretty much dead on arrival with extremely low usefulness; only to those who burst their monthly caps on superior 4 mpd cards, and bother to track Man Utd match days.

But…what if you’re a Man Utd fan? I mean, do you really need this card to “prove” that you’re a fan? I’m a (depressed) Man Utd fan too, and carrying a card with such poor benefits in my wallet would probably have a further negative impact on my mental health. Skip this card, seriously.
