China Edition: KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes for May 2025 (with map)

Enjoyed Spontaneous Escapes (SE) discounted routes for flights to/from Singapore? Did you know that there’s also a China Edition of SE released every month? I’ve shared this a number of times in Suitesmile Chat, but here’s a detailed guide.

How is this useful for Singapore-based travellers?

While the “normal” SE features discounted routes to/from Singapore (and some fifth freedom ones), the China Edition features the same discount (usually 30% off) for Singapore Airlines flights to/from selected Chinese cities.

Obviously, this SE is most useful for China-based travellers. But if you’re based in Singapore (like me), here’s how you stretch your miles even further. With the “normal” SE deal, travellers can’t combine 2 segments into one booking, to enjoy 30% off that entire itinerary.

For example: Travelling from Beijing to Bali (via Singapore) would require 2 separate SE bookings:

  • Segment 1: Beijing to Singapore (30.1k SE in Business Class)
  • Segment 2: Singapore to Bali (14.7k SE in Business Class)
  • Total: 44.8k miles

Through the China SE, it costs just 30.1k miles in Business Class for the entire route (both segments). That’s about 9 hours of total flying time. This is great for Singapore-based travellers who would like to do a side trip, before or after their trip to China. Of course, these are one-way rates and in this example, you’ll need to book separate flights to Beijing and from Bali.

Note: Itineraries involving regions other than Indonesia and Malaysia would cost a little more, but still cheaper than 2 separate bookings.

Head home before flying again

The system won’t allow your layover in Singapore to exceed 24 hours, but it’s possible to book flight combinations with an overnight layover (to sleep and/or repack your luggage at home in Singapore) before the onward flight (example below).

Can you cancel an existing award booking, then book this SE deal?

If you already have a confirmed KrisFlyer award booking, and found lower rates through Spontaneous Escapes, you can cancel the existing booking and pay the following miles redeposit fee, depending on your award type:

  • Saver booking: US$75
  • Advantage booking: US$50

Your miles from the previous booking will then be returned to your account. Not sure about your existing booking type? Chat with a Singapore Airlines representative here.

✍️ It’s recommended to book the Spontaneous Escapes flight first, before doing the cancellation, in case availability runs out. Be sure to have enough miles in your balance for the new booking!
