Nerfed: Mari Credit Card to stop awarding unlimited 5% cashback coins on Shopee

MariBank updated its terms and conditions for the Mari Credit Card today, to include an end date to the 5% Unlimited Shopee Coins Promotion: 23 January 2025.

Mari Credit Card gives you 1.5% cashback, great foreign exchange rates with no foreign transaction fees and it does not come with an annual fee.

Cardholders can receive 1.5% cashback on any currency spending; uncapped for SGD transactions, up to S$1,500 per calendar month (till 31 Dec 2026) for foreign currency transactions. No minimum spending is required.

The existence of this card also means that the opportunity cost of using Miles credit cards for foreign currency spending is now about 4.75%, as those cards come with around 3.25% in FX fees and no cashback.

Cardholders can also earn 1.5% Shopee coins when transacting with Mari Credit Card Instant Checkout on Shopee, but there are better miles and cashback cards for Shopee spending!

Is the Mari Card still good?

It’s unfortunate that MariBank, which is owned by Sea Group, which also owns Shopee, is removing the key selling point of the Mari card. I can only hope that there’s a replacement offer in the works, from 24 Jan 2025 onwards. There must be one, surely!

Without this promotion, the Mari card will continue to be one of the top General Spending (SGD only) cards in Singapore. This is due to the 1.7% cashback rate, and zero annual fee.

Mari cardholders can also receive 3% cashback on foreign currency spending until 31 Dec 2025, but it comes with a 3% FX fee which cancels out this “promo”. There are many better cards for foreign currency spending.
