Best Credit Cards for Petrol in Singapore (Miles vs Cashback)

At a glance: Best credit cards for Petrol

If you’re looking for low-stress, realistic credit cards for fuel savings, you’ve come to the right page. However, note that saving on petrol is not just about using the right cards; your choice of petrol station brand matters.

Motorists should also be aware that there are many credit cards out there advertising unrealistic discount rates that require a lot of tracking/calculating work to achieve and are only possible with precise transaction amounts on specific fuel grades.

For fuss-free, outright fuel savings (20-30% cheaper than well-known fuel brands), go with Sinopec, Smart Energy or Cnergy. No specific cards required, but you can get an additional 4 miles per dollar or 8% cashback with the right ones.

The next best fuss-free options are with SPC. Get an easy 22.2% saving with an AMEX True Cashback Card, up to S$1,690 (till 31 Dec 2026), or an uncapped 20.1% saving with the POSB Everyday Card.

For the bigger brands, get a 23.6% saving at Caltex and 20.9% saving at Shell with the Citi Cash Back Card (with min. spend and monthly cap) and uncapped 18-20% savings at Esso with the DBS Esso Card.

Typical Petrol MCCs

Cardholders don’t have to worry about strange Merchant Category Codes (MCCs) for petrol/fuel spending in Singapore, as they are (usually) correctly categorized.

Here are the typical MCCs for petrol/fuel spending:

MCCDescription
5541Service Stations (With or Without Ancillary Services)
5542Fuel Dispenser, Automated

Fuel stations and prices in Singapore

Not all fuel brands offer the same prices for each fuel grade, with Smart Energy, Cnergy, SPC and Sinipec generally cheaper than the others. Fuel prices at Shell, Esso and Caltex are usually similar and more expensive.

Sinopec regularly runs promos offering 20-29% discounts (check their Facebook), which can bring the prices similar to those of Smart Energy and Cnergy. These are the best fuel stations for outright fuel savings (before credit card cashback/miles).

Unlike in some countries, each brand tends to maintain the same prices across all stations in Singapore.

Here are the fuel station brands in Singapore, along with the links to check the latest prices (if any):

Note: There are many fuel price comparison pages in Singapore, but they don’t show the prices of all fuel brands and may not be regularly updated: sgpetrol.app, motorist.sg, carsnap.sg.
